Beautiful weather and a fantastic race course greeted riders for the second ever mountain bike race at the New Italy Mountain Bike Forest this past Sunday, 17th June.
The race was held using an XC Marathon format which saw the large field of over 80 entrants, including juniors, recreational and elite riders battle a 4 hour time limit to complete as many laps of the 21km course as they could. Whilst New Italy is known for fun, fast and flowing trails many riders reported the lap to be far harder than anticipated.
“I couldn’t believe how tough the course felt today” explains Cameron Johnston, a competitor in the male pairs category. “The middle third of the lap was very technical and it took a lot of energy to keep the speed up without clipping a tree and of course the massive climb up Tick Fence Trail was a real sting in the tail!”
Round 3 is scheduled for 23 September. We are still refining the details but at this stage we think it will be a full 30km lap and there will be timed segments. Something a bit different for XC and a load of fun.
