Wow, what a great day of racing we had for our first ever mountain bike event at New Italy Mountain Bike Forest on the 25th March. This race  was the first in a series that includes three rounds: XCO, XCM and XC Enduro with timed stages.  After some showers during the week, Sunday cleared to a beautiful day on the North Coast.

The event hub was buzzing with activity early and there was a great family friendly race vibe. A huge field of 116 entrants, including juniors, recreational and elite riders completed a set number of laps of a 5km course. The trails were fast and in fantastic shape for the race –  a big improvement from the mud-fest of Saturday afternoon. Many thanks go out to the amazing efforts of the NRDW MTB Club trail crew and some last-minute leaf-blower efforts early Sunday morning.

Despite some teething problems with the scheduling and timing, most riders reported having a great time racing the fast and fun trails. Thank you to everyone who came along.

Even with an event organiser (White Lightning Events) these races take an enormous amount of effort to coordinate with many hours of trail grooming and contributions from volunteers on the day. Thank you to everyone who helped out.

Also, a big thank you to the local businesses who made generous donations for prizes.  These businesses include:

Richmond Valley Council
Forestry Corporation NSW
The Rod n Reel Hotel at Woodburn
On Track Trails
The Bicycle Emporium
Sunrise Cycles
Betta Hire

Check out the gallery images below and make sure you register early for the next round of racing which is an XC Marathon Event on the 17th June, 2018.
